Up for the challenge.
A four-quarter team performance will be paramount on Saturday at Adelaide Oval. Here's what AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss had to say ahead of the test against Adelaide on their home deck.
Forced changes for the clash:
"Fortunately, we've been able to get a few players in form. I think when you're in a situation where you can make decisions a little bit on form, you know you're going okay and your list is in reasonable health, and obviously you've got form on your list. So, the most recent of the times, we've got some players that have been able to find their way back into some good form and performing some good roles. We obviously want to drive that internal competition where we can."
Sam Docherty's inclusion:
"He'll play a pretty significant role for us, but like everyone, when you're searching for a bit of form and want to elevate yourself into the team, sometimes you get a bit of space to be able to do that. He was able to go back and play really well and finds himself back in the team. I can confirm that he will play."
Carlton's backline coming up against the Adelaide talls:
"(Adelaide) have been (dangerous), they've all been scoring threats. But I don't think it's (just) their talls, you've got to look at their system and the way they've been able to flow the ball and get speed on the ball has been particularly impressive, and their smalls have been able to hit the scoreboard as well. So, we'll have those individual battles, clearly, but there's going to be a system in behind it that relies on a little bit of pressure on the ball coming down. Otherwise it's pretty clean, I think anyone's going to have a hard day if it's coming down too fast."
Securing three wins in a row:
"I think it's been a gradual build for us. We had some confidence early days about what we were doing, clearly we weren't able to execute for long enough. The competition asks you to play longer than a couple of quarters, and it's a pretty tight competition. What we've been able to do is play closer to our best more often. We haven't relied on one phase of the game, even though defence has been a strong point of ours, we've been able to get a few other parts of our game going as well. So, that's rounded us out and certainly given us more balance and hopefully a few more challenges for the opposition to be able to take on."
Capitalising on red-time moments:
"There's a fair bit of footy that's got to happen throughout the quarter before you lock down into what the end of a quarter looks like. We're all trying to master these scenarios, and we're all trying to master these situations in games where we can limit the opposition to be able to kick scores against, so we'll all have our different little challenges on that. If that's their current challenge, then hopefully we can capitalise on it, but I think the more broader message for us is that it's going to take four quarters to be able to get this done and, we appreciate we're not going to have it all on our own terms, and I'm sure at some stage the crowd will join in as well. So, we'll have to make sure we take care of that as well."
Containing Adelaide's Ben Keays:
"We always try to approach any game that we play as system vs system, and we understand that there's going to be players within that who are going to play well, you can't stop everybody. He is one part of a bigger jigsaw puzzle that we've got to take care of, whether that's their forward threats or their threats on the floor. We've got to ensure that ball's coming at the speed we want rather than coming in too fast."
Being back at Adelaide Oval:
"Our history before our last three games wasn't very good, so we've been able to break the back of that. Adelaide presents another challenge itself, but I'm big on you don't play the venue, every venue has its own constraints, and that includes having a home crowd, and opposition will always want to do well in front of their home crowd. So, we've got a responsibility how we turn up. We've got a responsibility how we respond to that, and consistency that we need to be able to play. But, we certainly don't play the venue, and we've got some confidence in our last few appearances, but the reality is we haven't got the job done against Adelaide, so that's the next little challenge in front of us."
George Hewitt's brilliant current form:
"He keeps showing up in all these really important moments. The way he's gone about it, he's an absolute pro, the detail he puts into his game. I'm really pleased to see that he's got the reward, and fortunate our midfielders have largely spent a lot of time together, which hasn't been afforded in previous seasons for one reason or another. To have that consistency and that added responsibility.. I think when you watch him play, he really does feel like that this is his team and his midfield and that's really showing. The great thing about George is he keeps it really simple and just understands his job and he just gets his job done, which makes him enormously reliable."
Spreading the load between midfielders:
"What we've tried to do is spread the forces a little bit. It's also not just about the midfield, it's been about our backline and our forward line and and how we how we share the load quite a fair bit. One of the better things about Patrick Cripps' leadership is being able to put other people forward and show belief in them and confidence in them to be able to get the job done, and so he's got more people joining him. Adam Cerra's had a good patch of form, Hewett as well, Sam Walsh has hit his straps in the last couple of weeks, (and) Tom De Koning. We feel like we are spreading that load, so it doesn't feel like it all sits on the captain's shoulders, but it will take everyone. Adelaide have shown they're a very good side, so it's going to take everyone to get this job done."
