IT WAS the night Harry O’Farrell and his teammates needed.
At the fourth time of asking, the boyhood Bluebagger was able to sing the song for the first time, joining Flynn Young for the obligatory Gatorade shower after the eight-point win against Melbourne.
Selected with pick No.40 in last year’s Telstra AFL Draft, the young key defender has already displayed some of the traits at the elite level which will hopefully hold him in good stead in Navy Blue for years to come.
Speaking following the win, O’Farrell said the opportunity to celebrate with teammates made the hard work all worth it.
“The boys have been working hard for a few weeks now - to finally get the reward was really good,” O’Farrell said.
“Getting the Gatorade shower, my eyes were stinging. To do it with Flynn [Young] as well, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
O’Farrell was one of eight Carlton players with less than 50 games on Friday night, joining Young, Ashton Moir, Will White, Matthew Carroll Cooper Lord, Francis Evans and Lachie Cowan in that group.
In his short time at the Blues, O’Farrell has been able to lean on the teachings of experienced teammates - hailing the influence of a trio of All Australians that have taken him under his wing from the outset.
“Being there with Jacob Weitering, Nick Haynes and Adam Saad… they’ve been helping me a lot. You pick their brains throughout the week and get little tips and tricks from them - ‘Haynesy’ is really good with that, he’s obviously been in the system for ages.”
Rejoicing in the scenes post-match with not only his teammates but also his family (who he described as “mad ‘Baggers”), O’Farrell was back to being a Carlton supporter, riding all the bumps on the bench in the final minutes as the Blues held on.
There was even more reason for O’Farrell to celebrate in recent weeks.
Despite having over a year to run on his existing contract, O’Farrell couldn’t have been quicker to put pen to paper on a one-year extension - taking his tenure to at least the end of 2027.
“It’s great - obviously I would never leave the Club. I love it.
“To get the extra year is just awesome. Hopefully there’s a few good years to come.”
