MAKE IT double.
Carlton will unveil its second first-round draftee on Thursday night, with Poppy Scholz confirmed to make her AFLW debut for the Blues.
A young key defender who was drafted to the Blues with pick No.6 last December, Scholz will play her first game alongside father-daughter recruit Sophie McKay, who it was confirmed on Monday would continue her family legacy in Navy Blue.
There’s an added sense of theatre for Scholz, who will debut on Thursday night against Collingwood first-gamer Violet Patterson — who she is housemates and best friends with, having both played for Glenelg throughout their juniors.
Scholz - who was born on New Year’s Eve in 2006 - comes from a fair sporting pedigree, with mum Peta representing Australia in netball while sister Matilda achieved the Rising Star and Mark of the Year double for Port Adelaide last year.
Highly touted for her athleticism and versatility, Scholz has found a home down back for the Blues this year, playing in both of Carlton’s practice matches in the build-up to the season opener against Collingwood.
Come Thursday night, Scholz will blaze her own trail as a new Bluet, on a night where Carlton and Collingwood go back to the future by kickstarting season 10 just as they did in the inaugural AFL game in 2017 when Scholz was just 10 years of age.
Carlton will announce its team on Wednesday night.
