FROM having him as his mentor to following in his footsteps.

Billy Wilson has swapped from the No.35 jumper to the No.15, filling the vacancy left by teammate and former Carlton captain Sam Docherty.

The much-loved former Blue announced his retirement with a month to go in the 2025 AFL season, having made a key impact on a number of teammates throughout his journey - in particular, fellow half-back Wilson.

Wilson’s first game was alongside Docherty, before he played the final three games of the season following the veteran’s retirement.

In swapping numbers, Wilson said the chance to wear the number of someone who had a significant effect on him was “pretty crazy”.

“It was great having him as a mentor, he was so good for me - on-field and off-field.

“It’s pretty special to be wearing it now. From early last year to when he retired, I had him as a mentor a lot - getting to play a few games in the VFL with him was great, and the pride he wore the No.15 with plus the care he had for his teammates always stood out.”

Wilson spoke of the conversation he had with Docherty, who is one of seven Blues on the No.15 locker for playing over 100 games for the football club.

“I sent him a message to ask what he’d think, and as soon as he said yes, I jumped straight in.

“He was pumped for me, saying he wouldn’t want anyone else wearing it. I’m glad that’s what he thought about me in the number.”

Wilson’s move also allowed new Blue Harry Dean to take the No.35 worn by his dad Peter, with the three having a quick, impromptu conversation on Friday morning when Harry officially arrived at IKON Park as a Blue.

“It was a great chat with them.

“If I was at the same club where my father had such a history, I’d want the number too! I know he’ll wear it with pride, he totally deserves it - and it’ll be really good to play alongside him.”
