Throughout his five seasons in Navy Blue, Zac Williams has played just about everywhere.
He was in at the centre bounce of his Carlton debut, returned to half-back midway through his first year and has kicked 37 goals in his last 28 games where he’s played mainly as a forward.
But the veteran is now expecting to return to where he started, spending more time behind the ball once again this off-season.
As he told media in Shepparton on Thursday, he’s loving the change - but is still keeping his options open for the year ahead.
“At the moment, I’m back to my roots and playing at half-back, which I’m really enjoying,” Williams said.
“I know ‘Vossy’ likes to flick the magnets around a little bit, so I try and make sure I’ve got all roles covered - during a game, I could get flicked forward or into the midfield.”
It promises to be a very new-look Carlton line-up when heading to Sydney in Opening Round, with the Blues making no secret of their search for improved ball movement heading into 2026.
The move of Williams to defence is no doubt in search of that, alongside the addition of Ollie Florent as well as the impending return of Nic Newman in the back half alone.
Then there’s the youthful contingent that broke through at the end of last year who will be hoping to cement their own spots in their respective positions.
“Having a lot of young boys get a lot of games at the back-end of last year, that builds their experience - I know they’re pretty fired up to get the season going.
“We’ve got a lot of new faces and a lot of young boys as well.”
