THE PRIVILEGE of representing the Navy Blue.
This time 12 months ago, Jagga Smith had his AFL dream put on hold - but now seven days out from Opening Round, he’s closing in on a much-anticipated debut.
Smith could hardly have been more impressive in the Blues’ final dress rehearsal against the Cats, amassing 37 disposals and kicking a goal as all attention now turns to the season opener.
Speaking to FOX Footy post-match, Smith detailed his gratitude at being back out there and doing what he loves.
“I’m loving being out here,” Smith said.
“I’m a footy lover, so I really missed it. It’s great to be back out there, I’m rapt.
“When you have a long time off, it’s really tough and you really miss the game… it’s been a long journey, but it’s full credit to the rehab staff who got me back to this position.”
The Blues will travel to Sydney next week for a game which has been spoken about ad nauseam in recent months - but Smith himself has been thinking about it for even longer.
The humble youngster said he’d been visualising his AFL debut for a long time, particularly during his 2025 layoff.
“It’s very exciting. Nothing is a guarantee and I’ve got to get my name called out first.
“I think I am ready. I’ve had 12 months out of the game to think about it, so if I get my opportunity this week, I’ll take it with both hands.”
