VFL Senior Coach Damian Truslove analyses the performances of the 12 AFL-listed Blues who featured for the Carlton Reserves in Round 5 VFL action.
8. Lachie Fogarty
24 disposals, six tackles, two goals
‘Fog’ played a combination of inside midfield and forward. He was a really good leader on the night and used the ball well while hitting the scoreboard - he was an influential player in the win.
13. Blake Acres
21 disposals, one goal
Blake was our captain on the night and he led from the front with his voice and keeping the boys united. He played on the wing and found plenty of the ball, making some good decisions to be brave with ball in hand. He had another solid performance.
15. Billy Wilson
41 disposals, eight intercepts
Billy played off half-back and it was his best game for the season: he’s been building, and his form keeps getting better. He gave us a lot of bounce off half-back, used the ball well and was really powerful. We had Billy and ’Saady’ play in a few centre bounces with their fast feet, we thought it was a good opportunity for them in there and they did really well.
28. Harry Charleson
29 disposals, nine marks, six rebound 50s
Harry had an important job on Jed Hagan who’s probably their best player. Harry has had three good games in a row now, where he’s had an important role for us while also getting involved with our ball movement coming out of our defensive 50.
29. George Hewett
40 disposals, 11 clearances
George was fantastic as an inside midfielder, typically hard and tough and found plenty of the footy. He showed a lot of courage with the way he used the ball, looking to go through the middle of the ground - he was a good leader on the night.
30. Jack Ison
Nine disposals, four goals
Jack worked hard early without reward in the first half, but then the reward came in the third quarter. He kicked three goals to take away the momentum that Tasmania had during that quarter. He can turn a game really quickly.
31. Campbell Chesser
28 disposals, four clearances, one goal
‘Chess’ played inside mid again which has been a new role for him. He found lots of the ball and his transition running between contests was a real highlight on the night. The way he supported our defence was excellent.
34. Rob Monahan
Unfortunately Rob got the shoulder injury in the first quarter. He got involved really early in the game but unfortunately came off and didn’t play any further part.
37. Jordan Boyd
27 disposals (89 per cent efficiency), 11 marks
‘Boydy’ was an outstanding leader for us on the night. He played across half-back and gave us plenty of bounce, while also setting up our backline with really good communication and leadership. He was influential when we were under pressure to keep the boys composed, and he had a good combination with his ball use of hitting the shorts when they were on and using that long kick he’s got.
41. Matt Duffy
Six disposals
In the first quarter, we spoke about being brave with the ball: he had a bounce coming off half-back and hit a kick into the corridor which set up an entry for us. He’s growing in confidence. He took a really important mark in defence in the last quarter: he continues to work on his craft and is growing.
42. Adam Saad
26 disposals (92 per cent efficiency), six rebound 50s
‘Saady’ was fantastic off half-back. It was some of the best form we’ve seen from him this year, giving us drive and using his speed and taking the game on. He worked extremely hard and halved a couple of critical one-on-one contests.
47. Wade Derksen
18 disposals, seven marks, two goals
Wade played forward for most of the game as well as second ruck, which was a slightly different role for him. He gave us a really good target and kicked a couple of goals, while his work in the ruck was good in terms of his follow-up around the ball. We wanted to have a look at him up forward as a Club: we needed a key forward and he was really team-oriented, he’s happy to play anywhere.
