The Carlton Football Club is proud to unveil its 2026 Indigenous guernsey, brought to life by Larrakia artist Cian McCue.
Carlton's 2026 Indigenous guernsey will be worn during the Sir Doug Nicholls Rounds (10 and 11).
With a one-club approach, all four programs will again wear the same design in their respective matches.
The guernsey was created around the Larrakia calendar, with each of the seasons reflecting distinct weather changes and plant and animal activity.
McCue said each season is brought to life through a significant plant or animal, with all of them represented across the guernsey.
“The importance behind the design is to put country at the forefront and representing our connection to country. The guernsey tells the story of Larrakia country and who we are as Larrakia people,” McCue said.
“The artwork uses mainly line work – not dots, which is more distinctive of Larrakia art.
“When we look deeper at the elements that make up the artwork, the saltwater crocodile (dangalaba) represents the Saltwater mob, which the deep blue of the ocean is reflective of Carlton’s Navy Blue.”
The guernsey has a direct link to Carlton forward Jesse Motlop, who is a proud Larrakia man.
“I have a special connection to the guernsey, my dad, a few of my uncles and I even have a business called Seven Seasons based on the Larrakia calendar,” Motlop said.
“It is a shame I won't be running out in the guernsey but a few of the boys have said they’ll do some celebrations so it will be pretty cool to watch.”
The seven seasons featured on the guernsey are the Balnba (Rainy season), Dalay (Monsoon), Mayilema (Knock ‘em down storms), Damibila (Barramundi season). Dinidjangama (Heavy dew), Gurulwa guligi (Big wind), Dalirrgang (build up).
