Carlton's newest recruit Matthew Dick may only be in his second week at Visy Park, but already he's set his sights on Round One.

The 20-year-old former Swan who is yet to make his AFL debut, has revealed that he hopes to play in the Thursday night blockbuster against Richmond at the MCG.

"To be honest I want to play Round One,” Dick said. "That's where my head is at the moment – it would be such a great honour."

Born in Scotland to Scottish-Australian parents, Dick and his family spent his first year in the UK before they re-settled in the Victorian town of Macedon, approximately 60km north-west of Melbourne.

Dick says after spending two years in Sydney, he's thrilled to be closer to home.

"Mum and Dad are really happy, and I have a brother and sister as well, so it's nice to be closer to them,” Dick said.

The former Swan has praised his old club for the support they provided him in commencing his AFL journey, particularly their mentoring.

"It was a great experience," Dick said of his time at Sydney. “The leadership that they had in Sydney was amazing. It was such a great experience – I learned a lot out of that."

With pre-season training underway, the new Blue is now focused on his future.

"It's very exciting – this Club's got a great history and hopefully I do get the chance to play, it would mean a lot,” he said.

"I've (just) got to get my body in shape, avoid injuries and put myself in contention for Round One."
