MARC Murphy is hoping to reap the rewards of a strong summer as he braces for his 14th season in navy blue.

After winning a second John Nicholls Medal back in 2017, injury restricted Murphy to just 13 games last season. However, the veteran believes he is fit and raring to go for season 2019.

Speaking to Channel 7’s Mark Stevens, Murphy said the benefits of a full pre-season couldn’t be understated.

“Pre-season has been good body-wise. I’ve gotten through basically everything,” Murphy said.

“I’ve found out over the years that when you don’t have a good pre-season, it is hard to have a strong year.

“I’m looking forward to the next month or so building into the season.”

Murphy will enter the upcoming campaign with a significant milestone, as he prepares for his 250th game for the Club.

However, for the first time since game No.142, Murphy won’t lead the Blues out as captain. He said his decision to pass the baton onto two outstanding young leaders would be mutually beneficial.

“It does give me the chance to sit back at times and let Sammy and ‘Crippa’ speak most of the time,” he said.

“I’m 31 and enjoying hopefully a few more years of playing footy with these younger guys.”

Murphy also paid credit to Brendon Bolton, who is preparing for his fourth season at the helm.

Murphy said he couldn’t have been more impressed with the senior coach over the summer.

“Rather than him being bogged down all the time, he’s spreading the load really well,” Murphy said.

“He’s a little bit more laid-back and giving some opportunities to other coaches to take more of a lead.”
