OVERVIEW

This time 12 months ago, Will Setterfield arrived as one of Carlton’s newest recruits: he was someone who was recruited with an eye to the future.

In his first season at Ikon Park, it’s safe to say he showed more than enough to whet the Navy Blue appetite.

Entering on the back of an ACL injury which disrupted his 2018, the 21-year-old Setterfield - who in effect was playing his first season of AFL football - got better with every game.

Come the end of the AFL season, Setterfield began to show his true potential, producing exciting cameos against Melbourne (three goals), Sydney (nine tackles) and - best of all - Adelaide.

BEST PERFORMANCE

He may have narrowly missed out on the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination, but Brownlow votes in Round 19 were just reward for an outstanding Setterfield showing against Adelaide.

The 21-year-old showed all of his class at the MCG, producing a blind turn in the second quarter that had Bluebaggers out of their seats.

They followed suit in the final term, when Setterfield - who had 24 disposals and seven inside 50s - sealed the game with an instinctive snap from the pocket.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

Either the blind turn or the goal against the Crows could fit here, but it’d be remiss not to mention the signs shown by Setterfield in other matches throughout 2019.

The recruit showed his versatility in his first season as a Blue, having stints up forward and even across half back to go with his usual role in midfield.

He proved his adaptability in Round 16 against Melbourne, making the switch to attack and shining against the Demons.

As the Blues threatened to come away with a second consecutive comeback win, Setterfield bobbed up with three goals from five scoring shots in effectively one quarter of football.

THEY SAID IT

The football world sat up and take notice of Setterfield for his showing against Adelaide — the Senior Coach led the way when it came to singing his praises.

“I was really impressed,” David Teague said.

“To hear the fans get right behind him when he came off the field at one stage, our fans are so supportive and encouraging.

“He’s just getting better and better each week and I thought [the Round 19] game was possibly his most complete.”
