Carlton VFLW was defeated by 32 points against the reigning premier North Melbourne Werribe on Saturday at IKON Park
Despite a determined performance against one of the competition’s leading teams, the Blues went down 6.4 (40) to 11.6 (72).
An explosive first term saw Carlton take the early lead as Nell Morris-Dalton slotted the opening goal within the first two minutes. North then answered with a goal a minute later, before Ellie Sbeghen sent Carlton back ahead.
With their speedy start setting the tone as well as a home ground advantage, the Blues matched the Kangaroos’ physicality on the ball. Carlton’s defensive line held firm, denying North Melbourne the chance for easy opportunities inside 50. Emily Elkington was on fire during the opening half, clearing the ball at every opportunity.
Carlton’s ball movement was smooth as it linked through the corridor, forcing North onto the back foot. Sophia McCarthy capitalised on the team's momentum, adding her own goal.
North pushed hard in the second quarter, attempting to close the gap, but Carlton’s defence from Lucy Burke and Hannah Scott gave North no space to move, finishing on 21 disposals each.
The Blues’ midfield worked tirelessly to control territory, but North slowly began to work its way back into the contest. The visitors eventually broke through late in the quarter, wrestling back momentum, however Carlton still held the lead at the main break.
The third quarter saw the Kangaroos’ intensity grow, beginning to gain clean possession and put Carlton’s defence under pressure. Blue Mia Fuller worked hard all day with 14 tackles, helping to steady the team as they fought to stay in the game.
But an eight-goal North Melbourne second half was too much for Carlton to overcome, as the visitors ran away with the win.
