Carlton VFLW was edged out by Port Melbourne on Saturday at IKON Park, going down by 19 points, 3.5 (23) to 6.6 (42).
With only one spot separating the two sides on the ladder, sitting 6th and 7th, it was no surprise the game started evenly.
The Blues began strongly, controlling possession and gaining momentum early. Both teams slotted a behind before their first goal of the game, which came via a Tahlia Plunkett specialty.
Plunkett's presence around the goal set the tone for the attackers, while Ellie Sbeghen's impressive marking helped Carlton maintain control. Sbeghen finished with 51 hit-outs and four marks.
Port Melbourne quickly responded, breaking through Carlton’s defence and taking a one-point lead as quarter time approached.
A key play from the Blues saw Hannah Bowey make a crucial smother as the Borough advanced dangerously, denying them a scoring chance. Entering quarter time tied, the contest was evenly poised.
Both sides boosted their intensity in the second quarter, as pressure increased. Port Melbourne gained an edge with another goal. But as the Borough built a lead, the Blues responded with a goal of their own through clean ball movement to Sophia McCarthy, who took a confident mark inside 50 before converting. This halted Port Melbourne’s scoring run.
The Blues persisted, adding another goal to narrow the gap. The match remained close, with neither side able to pull ahead. Carlton’s defensive efforts were vital to ensure this, especially in the slippery conditions, which made for scrappy football.
Carlton advanced, linking short passes and controlling the play into its attacking half. The Blues' pressure created several chances, but despite their efforts, Port Melbourne capitalised on their opportunities, steadily extending their lead. Their ability to convert goals was the difference in controlling the scoreboard.
The Blues kept fighting, but slippery conditions, relentless pressure, and the Borough’s ability to seize key moments made it too hard to pull the gap back. Nevertheless, Carlton’s effort across all quarters showed their resilience in a competitive, closely fought match.
