CARLTON produced a commanding final-quarter surge at IKON Park to defeat Richmond by 36 points.
In a Round 15 clash that ebbed and flowed across four quarters before the Blues broke the game open late, the Carlton Reserves returned to the winner’s list with a 15.12 (103) to 10.7 (67) win.
With the likes of Lachie Fogarty (27 disposals, one goal), Cooper Lord (26 disposals, one goal) and Darcy Tucker (29 disposals, one goal) standing up, the Blues managed to overcome a narrow deficit at the final change to kick the final eight goals of the game – six of those in the last term.
The Blues set the tone early through Fogarty, who opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest after strong forward-half pressure created the opportunity.
Carlton’s intent around the contest was clear from the outset, with repeated forward entries and aggressive ball movement putting Richmond under sustained pressure. Jordan Boyd added to the early momentum after drawing a 50-metre penalty, converting his first goal of the season and helping the Blues establish early control on the scoreboard.
Richmond, however, responded quickly with two consecutive goals as Carlton’s inside-50 connection momentarily wavered despite its territorial dominance. Darcy Tucker steadied for the Blues with a composed finish before Ashton Moir produced a moment of class, snapping truly through traffic to restore momentum.
Flynn Riley also impressed with a strong contested mark inside 50 but was unable to convert, and Richmond managed to claw back late in the term, trimming the margin to just three points at quarter time.
Moir continued to influence the contest early in the second term, winning a high free kick and launching a long-range goal from outside 50 to extend Carlton’s advantage. The Blues continued to generate momentum, with Riley dominating in the ruck and giving his midfielders first use.
Sam Paea took an old-fashioned hanger inside 50 and converted to further stretch the lead, before Campbell Chesser then got on the end of a sharp Lucas Camporeale delivery inside 50, finishing cleanly to push Carlton out to a 19-point buffer and appear in control.
But Richmond again wrestled momentum away with a powerful burst of four unanswered goals in quick succession. Carlton’s pressure remained strong, but the Tigers were clinical going forward, punishing turnovers and finishing efficiently to take the lead late in the first half.
Despite the Blues’ strong early work, Richmond went into half-time narrowly ahead.
The third quarter developed into a tough arm-wrestle. Carlton worked hard to generate repeat entries but struggled to convert field position into scoreboard impact, while Richmond again proved more efficient with its chances, extending the margin out to 13 points.
In response, Liam Farrar provided a crucial lift for the Blues, taking two strong contested marks inside 50 and converting both opportunities with composure. His efforts dragged Carlton right back into the contest on the scoreboard and reduced the margin to just two points heading into the final change.
With the game on the line, Carlton produced its most complete and ruthless quarter of the day. Cooper Lord ignited the surge with a clever snap from stoppage to put the Blues back in front early in the final term.
Moments later, Lord was again involved, delivering a key clearance that set up Flynn Young for his first goal of the afternoon.
From there, Carlton seized full control of the contest.
Zac Williams added an important major as the Blues’ confidence lifted, before Hudson O’Keeffe extended the margin further with another composed finish. Lucas Camporeale continued his growing influence on the game, as Liam Farrar capped off a strong performance with his third goal while Will Cookson added the finishing touch late as Carlton piled on six unanswered goals to close out the match in dominant fashion.
The final term showcased Carlton at its most efficient, combining clean stoppage work, defensive pressure and sharp execution going forward to completely overwhelm the Tigers and turn a tight contest into a comfortable victory.
It was a strong all-round performance from the Blues, recording 12 individual goalkickers and finishing with a 36-point win in what was nominally an ‘away’ game at IKON Park.
