THE Carlton Football Club is thrilled to announce that defender Liam Jones has re-signed with the Blues for the next three years.

The 28-year-old has recommitted to a new deal that will see him pull on the Navy Blue until at least the end of 2022.

Jones has played 55 games for Carlton since arriving at Ikon Park, and after initially joining the Club as a forward, has reinvented himself into one of the competition’s premier defenders.

The high-flying defender has become renowned for his elite closing speed and courageous aerial skills, which have made him a favourite among his teammates and the Carlton faithful.

Jones enjoyed a career-best season in 2018, capping it off with a sixth-place finish in the John Nicholls Medal.

Jones said he was proud to continue his career at Carlton.

“It’s great to re-sign, I love playing my football here and I feel like this group can achieve something special,” Jones said.

“My time here at Carlton has been quite the journey, going from a forward to a defender: the transition certainly had its challenges, but I’ve loved every minute of the journey. It’s been great to hone my defensive craft with Dale Amos who has backed me since day one and encouraged me to do it my way.

“The Club has shown great belief in me since I walked through the doors and I’m looking forward to working hard every day to help this group achieve success over the next three seasons.”

Carlton General Manager of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni said the Club was pleased to retain Jones.

“Through sheer hard work and determination, Liam has become an integral part of our backline and has developed into a great leader among our defensive group,” Silvagni said.

“He shows such dedication to his defensive craft and it’s a credit to Liam that he has become one of the best defenders in the competition.

“We hold Liam in such high regard at the Club and we are delighted he will be part of our exciting future.”
