HEAD of Football Brad Lloyd said Nick Austin’s experience, knowledge and character makes him the “perfect” fit for his new role.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Austin had been appointed to the role of Head of List Management.

It comes after 14 years in the AFL system for Austin, whose previous experience extends across recruiting and opposition analysis.

Speaking to Carlton Media, Lloyd said Austin had been the standout in a thorough interview process conducted by the Club.

“First and foremost, he’s an outstanding person. He’s a very experienced person in football,” Lloyd said.

“It’s [a role] which you learn by doing the time in it. He’s done 14 years and the contacts he has made, the things he has learnt and with his background, he’s perfect for it.

“It’s a really important role for the Club.”

Starting out at the Western Bulldogs, Austin held roles at Port Adelaide and Richmond - having a big part to play in their premiership list build - before returning to Whitten Oval.

It was in his second stint at the Dogs where he took on the role as National Recruiting Manager.

Lloyd said the player acquisition aspect was a key part of the position in conjunction with the wider list management team.

“The first thing for the Head of List Management is to drive the list management strategy for the Club. Nick will play a huge role in that,” he said.

“The list management strategy is hugely important as is the player retention part of the role.

“Player acquisition - looking at trade and free agency targets - and managing the overall draft process with Paul Brodie and the recruiting team [is also key].”

Looking to the 2020 season, Lloyd said the list was currently in good shape on the eve of the annual pre-season camp to Mooloolaba next week.

“We’re in good shape. There are plenty of numbers on the track,” he said.

“Everyone has come back fit and strong from Christmas. We’re building that up and getting into some real match simulation now.”
