TWO NEW experienced Blues are raising the standard and taking their teammates along for the ride.

It’s no surprise that the returning Eddie Betts and recent addition Jack Martin are adding a touch of class to pre-season training.

Since arriving in October and November respectively, the duo have been stationed largely in the forward line for immediate results.

Speaking to Carlton Media, assistant coach Cameron Bruce said the Club was “very fortunate” to be the home of the new additions.

He said that Betts was relishing his return to familiar surrounds.

“What Eddie brings is a real sense of the forward craft as well as leadership, we know that,” Bruce said.

“Having someone who knows the forward craft that well is great for our young group of players. With our small forwards in particular, everyone is really developing from his leadership — he’s helping the talls as well.

“You can see it with his drop-of-ball [approach], his body work, his goal sense. He makes the most of his opportunities.”

Similar to Betts is his counterpart in Martin, who has rotated between the forward line and midfield so far this summer.

With Carlton’s pace in attack identified as a key focus ahead of 2020, Bruce said Martin was making all the right noises so far.

Echoing Andrew Russell’s sentiments from earlier this month, he said Martin’s training standards were filtering across the whole group.

“To get Jack Martin in… he’s a high-quality player and a high-quality person,” he said.

“He’s got great leadership both on and off the ground and some real intent about the way he trains. The standards that he shows out on the track are improving everyone.”
