OVERVIEW

It was clear for all to see that Kerryn Harrington rose to the new challenge of co-captain in 2020.

After being named as an All Australian in 2019, Harrington only enhanced her reputation as one of the best defenders in the competition this season.

She was the rock at the heart of Carlton’s defence, leading with aplomb and guiding the likes of Mua Laloifi and Charlotte Wilson who enjoyed breakthrough seasons.

That’s not to say Harrington didn’t shine herself, enjoying arguably a career-best season in 2020.

If not for an injury against Melbourne in Round 6, her already-promising numbers would’ve been even more impressive.

A consecutive berth in the All-Australian side went one step closer when she was officially named in the 40-woman squad on Friday. She was also named Women’s Footy’s Defender of the Year.

BEST PERFORMANCE

There were a number of performances where Harrington stood up, but her showing against St Kilda takes the cake.

The defender was unstoppable against the Saints at Ikon Park, clearly producing a best-on-ground performance in the third annual AFLW Carlton Respects game.

Earlier that week, she spoke of the importance of that particular game to all involved at the Club.

Harrington rose to the occasion, amassing 21 disposals, eight marks and an all-too-prestigious chocolate frog.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

If you read Katie Loynes’ season review, this highlight would sound familiar.

But it simply couldn’t be overlooked for Harrington.

Both Harrington and Loynes grew up as Carlton supporters, were teammates at Diamond Creek and have been key in establishing the Game Changers as an AFLW force to be reckoned with.

So, when they both emerged from the race as co-captains in Round 1, the smiles on their faces said it all.
