THERE are moments in football time which live with you forever: the game-winning goal.

For Carlton supporters, there are some that immediately spring to mind. The big guns rising to the big occasion.

Stephen Kernahan clinching top spot after the final siren in 1987. Brendan Fevola at Football Park in 2004. Marc Murphy against Fremantle last year.

That’s not what we’re here for.

In the latest edition of Tuesday Tops, we look at the unlikely Navy Blue heroes who clinched memorable wins which Carlton won by two goals or less. Enjoy.

10. Ryan Houlihan

Ryan Houlihan certainly isn’t obscure to Bluebaggers by any means, having played 200 games for the Club after debuting in 2000. However, for the chainsaw celebration alone, this had to be in here. It was a handy night for Houlihan against Essendon in Round 3, 2003, collecting 28 disposals and two goals — including the sealing goal.

9. Brock McLean

“McLean’s marked, but he can’t get the journey.” And then he did. Carlton needed a big response in Round 18, 2012 against Richmond, and it delivered. Dennis Armfield and Bret Thornton kicked successive goals to give the Blues a sniff, before McLean’s forward entry from 60 metres on the boundary evaded everyone for the match-winning goal.

8. Jordan Russell

Carlton was looking to bounce back from the heartbreak of a draw the previous week against Essendon, but it looked headed for an identical result the next week against Adelaide. With scores level, Russell - on the back of outstanding work from good mate Kade Simpson - never looked like missing from 55 metres to seal a clutch win under the roof.

7. Ian Prendergast

Wins against Hawthorn this century have been few and far between for Carlton, but Ian Prendergast was on hand in 2004 to seal a narrow win. Less than two minutes after Nathan Lonie levelled the scores, the big man got on the end of a Brad Fisher mongrel to give the Blues back the lead. Minutes later, they were celebrating a 12-point win.

6. Tom Bell

We could spend days talking about this Tom Bell goal and the circumstances surrounding it, with Carlton going on to cement a finals berth in the most unlikely fashion. Or, we could put it in the words of the man himself.

5. Justin Davies

This weekend’s fixtured game was meant to be against the old enemy, so it makes sense to have Justin Davies in here. The talented youngster produced his finest performance when it mattered most, kicking three final quarter goals against Collingwood to inspire a famous Carlton comeback.

4. Joe Anderson

This isn’t all about the forwards. Playing in your eighth game of football, dropping back in the hole in front of a rampaging Jonathan Brown is the most unenviable of positions. Doing so with 20 seconds left on the clock and Carlton holding a six-point lead is fraught with danger. That’s exactly what Joe Anderson did to seal Carlton’s greatest ever comeback from three quarter time.

3. Adrian Deluca

We mentioned Justin Davies before, and it’s only natural that we mention Adrian Deluca. In the same game that Davies kicked three, Deluca kicked a goal from 50 to seal the win against the black and white. Nine months later, he would do it against the red and black: it’s not a bad double at all.

2. Jordan Doering

The year of 2002 was a difficult one for Carlton, with the Blues recording just three wins for the season. Two of those were sealed via the boot of Jordan Doering. The first came against Richmond in Round 14, with Doering nailing the final goal in a one-point win. Nine weeks later, he once again steadied the ship in a two-point win after the Western Bulldogs threatened to overturn a 56-point deficit.

1. Darren Pfeiffer

Seven Carlton games, one match-winning goal. It’s not the worst ratio for Darren Pfeiffer, who would play 16 games for Port Adelaide in 2012. However, this game in question was in 2008, where Pfeiffer - who was a late inclusion - collected the ball at full pace, snapped over his shoulder from the point post and seal an eight-point win over Fremantle. For sheer skill, this has to be No.1.
