CARLTON Head of Development Luke Power believes the team is clear in what they have to do to reach the “next level”.

In his first season at Ikon Park, Power has hit the ground running in his new role, working with the Club’s emerging players.

And as Carlton prepares for a second time for the season to start, Power said he has been impressed by the commitment and application on the track.

He said there was a clear understanding of what needed to be achieved.

“It has to be the consistency of mindset and performance,” Power told FOX Footy Live.

“If we can reduce that gap between our best and worst, no doubt we can be a consistent side that can give a lot of teams trouble.”

That was evident in Round 1 some 11 weeks ago, where Carlton pegged back the reigning premier but was unsuccessful after a slow start.

Power said it was crucial that the Blues didn’t give opposition sides a head start, particularly in a football landscape which now sees shorter quarters.

“We’ve been drilling into them - and ‘Teaguey’ has been amazing with this - about consistency but also a brand and style of football that our members and supporters are going to be proud to see,” he said.

“We feel our levels of competing and competitive instincts are starting to grow. That’s been our major focus.”

With three premierships medals at Brisbane and over 300 games at the Lions and Giants, Power - who has coached at GWS and the AFL Academy in recent years - has seen exactly what it takes to make it at the elite level.

Now back in club land, he’s intent on passing on those key lessons to Carlton’s next generation.

“I’ve been fortunate to have some really good coaching mentors in my time in football with Leigh Matthews, ‘Vossy’ for a while, Kevin Sheedy, Mark Williams and now David Teague at the Carlton Football Club,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying working mainly with the developing players, helping them and hopefully imparting some of the lessons I’ve learnt during my playing career.”
