FEELING fresh and fit, David Cuningham just wants to play some football.

The 23-year-old featured against the reigning premiers in Round 1, kicking two goals — including Carlton’s first of the season.

Now, with Carlton’s return to football just four days away, the speedster is focused on cementing a consistent role in the 22.

After a career-best run of form in 2019, injury cut short Cuningham’s season: he’s hoping to make up for lost time.

“I’m going really well and the body is feeling good,” Cuningham said.

“I think everyone freshened up over that break but we also got in some really heavy training that allowed us to prepare for games properly.

“The last three weeks have been a solid build-up into match simulation… it’s a really positive vibe.”

Cuningham proved his potential last season, averaging 22 disposals against rivals Richmond, Collingwood and Essendon while kicking seven goals from nine games.

A reduction in quarters has seen Carlton supporters turn their attention to Cuningham, who will hopefully be able to utilise his burst over the course of the year.

“[The shorter quarters] doesn’t suit the endurance players as much, but it’s good for me,” he said.

“Hopefully I can impact full sequences in a game.”

In his time at Ikon Park since the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, Cuningham has often spent his time rotating between the forward line and midfield.

He believes it’ll be more of the same in a season like no other.

“I think I’ll mostly be playing up forward but I’ll have the versatility to go into the midfield as well, if that’s required,” he said.

“At the moment, I’ll be playing up forward and I’m looking forward to providing a contest and hopefully kicking a couple of goals as well.”
