CARLTON Senior Coach David Teague is hoping his forward line has a chance to fire in tomorrow’s clash with Melbourne.

The Blues were bolstered at the selection table with the inclusions of Eddie Betts and Harry McKay.

Having lauded their competitiveness on the training track since their return, Teague said the onus was now on the playing group to perform when the ball is bounced.

“We’ve got some talls down there that are competing really well at the moment,” Teague told media on Friday.

“The guys up the field, to see Mitch, Levi and Harry give us a contest and get it to ground and bring into it guys like Eddie and Jack Martin and David Cuningham — it really gives us a focal point.”

Carlton will clearly be hoping for a more even spread compared to the season opener, on a night where Jack Martin announced himself with four goals.

Teague said that the expectation of Martin was that he contributes just as he did in Round 1.

“We expect the same. He’ll come out and have a job to do,” he said.

“What we’ve loved is the way he competes, he’s really strong in the contest. He’s tough.

“I’ve been on record saying he’s lifted the standard — he doesn’t stand out now. Other guys are matching him, and I think he has to take credit for that.”

With the slow start from Round 1, Teague said the message had been clear over the last 11 weeks: compete for longer.

“We’ve shown we can do it for period, but we need to have that mindset that we’re there to compete for longer and get our job done for longer,” he said.

“I’m excited by the way they’ve trained and prepared, now we’ve got to go out and do it.

“We need to get the job done.”
