CARLTON defender Nic Newman will miss the remainder of the 2020 season after rupturing his patella tendon.

Newman injured his knee during a contest in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.

Scans on Sunday confirmed the extent of the injury, with Newman to require surgery to repair the patella tendon in his right knee.

“We’re really disappointed for Newy, especially after he worked so hard to get back from elbow surgery after Round 1,” Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said.

“His work rate and professionalism is second-to-none. While this is a significant injury, we have full confidence that Newy’s approach to his rehab will be first-class and we look forward to seeing him back to his best in 2021.”
