Carlton's Bryce Gibbs has praised his teammates for the determination they showed during Friday night's clash with Geelong at Etihad Stadium.

The Cats narrowly defeated the Blues by five points, in what proved to be a thrilling final term.

Regardless of the result, Gibbs says the team has now proved what the side is capable of.

"I just think it comes down to effort, doesn't it?" Gibbs said.

"There are probably games we've lost, where the effort has been inconsistent.

"It just shows you, when we bring that effort we can match it with a good team.

"The bar is set, there's no excuse now why we can't bring that every week from here on in."

The 25-year-old was undoubtedly at his best notching up 29 disposals and kicking four majors.

Gibbs credits midfield coach Dean Laidley for time spent mentoring him this season.

"I'm enjoying spending a lot more time through the midfield and have really enjoyed working with Dean Laidley this year, as the midfield coach.

"He's working really closely with me and has taught me a few tricks this year, which I am really grateful for."

Gibbs says that while he's bitterly disappointed with Friday night's result, the focus must now be on the Blues upcoming clash with Hawthorn at the MCG.

"Another tough assignment the Hawkes," Gibbs said.

"I've no doubt if we keep bringing that effort, hopefully we can go that seven or eight points better next week."
