CARLTON’S best moment of the 2019 season came on the boot of Marc Murphy against Fremantle.

And while on Saturday night he didn’t kick the match-winning goal, the former captain was just as important in the final term.

Murphy produced the two goal assists which were crucial in the Blues’ one-point win, given they were staring at a 12-point deficit with minutes remaining.

Speaking to AFL Nation, Murphy said a second consecutive close win would do wonders for the playing group’s confidence.

“Last week was huge for our confidence, to go down there in one of the hardest trips and win,” Murphy said.

“To hang on and back that up [against Essendon], we probably pushed it a little bit and should’ve been further in front.

“But they came at us really well in the last, so to fight back and get the win was great.”

Echoing David Teague’s sentiments, Murphy said a key takeaway from the win over the Bombers was the contribution of the unsung heroes.

Singling out Will Setterfield and David Cuningham, he said the continued support for Patrick Cripps was crucial in Carlton going to the next level.

“‘Setters’ and ‘Cunners’ have been around for long enough now and they’re starting to get more confidence in their footy,” he said.

“They’re men now, they’re not kids.

“They’re all playing their role and doing their bit which is important.”
