Bullants coach David Teague was, for the most part, satisfied with his players’ showing against a young opposition clearly down on numbers on last season.
It’s a challenge when you get off to a good start, to sustain it for four quarters,” Teague said, “and we probably let ourselves down a little in the third. But overall the players’ effort was reasonably good for the whole game.”
An eight-goal opening quarter from the Ants effectively put paid to the contest, with Mitch Robinson Robert Warnock, Jarrad Waite, Levi Casboult, Bret Thornton and Simon Wiggins amongst the best players afield.
“Robbie looked like he had a lot of fun out there, as did Simon Wiggins, and a number of the more experienced players are creating a great environment for the players who are coming back,” Teague said.
“Most of the players are having a good time, which I think is important, when they’re obviously disappointed in getting dropped or missing out on a game.
“I’ve been really happy with the way they’ve all gone about it, and that’s the culture that Carlton and the Northern Bullants are building.”
Asked to declare those players whose performances impressed him most, Teague unhesitatingly identified Robinson as the standout.
“Mitch came out and really attacked the ball. He finished up with 44 possessions, three goals and led the tackling, so he not only won the ball but contributed on the defensive side as well,” Teague said.
“Chris Johnson, Simon Wiggins, Bret Thornton and Jarrad Waite, who are a little bit older, really led the way. They’ve all been performing pretty consistently at this level now, which is really good.”
