Missing the Mark
You’d have to say that this week has been all about Walker’s mark.
You’d have to say that this week has been all about Walker’s mark.
It was majestic. I probably don’t need to describe it. You’ve probably watched it. Over and over. Like I have. And the best bit is that it happened while we were absolutely thumping an old foe.
This year has been all about re-awakening. Re-awakening the expectation to win. The utter pain of unexpected defeat. The swagger. The hum around the club. It was time to re-awaken the soaring navy Blue. Of Jezza. Or Buzza.
Because while it was about the future, it also reminded me of those marks of the past.
And the best mark in my lifetime was taken on the back of Craig Starcevich by Stephen Silvagni at half back in Round 14, 1988. I remember it because I was at the ground that day with my dad. It was a big deal to go the MCG in those days. We usually went to Princes Park. We would drive in from Watsonia, park on the oval at Princes Hill primary and walk a few blocks to the ground. It was local and contained. Like small town footy. So going to the ‘G was big, and not a little scary as a 10 year old. Which is probably why I got a bit confused coming back from a toilet run.
And that’s why I missed it.
While I was at the ground that day, I got lost. Everything was too big and too new and too similar. It was Mrs Hunter from footy clinic who found me wandering through the concrete bays looking for something, anything familiar. She took me to the Police stand and that’s where I sat while they paged my dad. That’s where I sat while he figured out something was wrong. That’s where I sat while he worked his way around the ground to get. That’s where I sat while Stephen Silvagni watched the ball approach, leapt, put a knee in Craig Starcevich’s back and controlled it just long enough to be called a mark.
I missed that moment. I don’t want to miss any more. And after Saturday night, I’m sure there will be plenty more.
Which Carlton moment do you wish you had seen live?
