CARLTON has welcomed a wealth of talent and experience in the appointment of new AFLW Assistant Coach Lauren Morecroft.

With experience on both sides of the pitch, the former inaugural Bulldog is looking forward to getting down to business with a focus on the Blues’ young midfield contingent.

“The young talent with Maddy, Lucy and Grace: I’m really excited for the midfield mix there, as well as the older girls that I’ve got connections with like Katie Loynes, Al Downie and Lauren Brazzale,” Morecroft said.

“That mix of midfield is going to be really exciting and hopefully I can bring something to the table too to take the next step with us.”

Carlton’s latest coaching acquisition brings with her the dual experience of having played both played and coached at the highest level.

As far as coaching experience goes, Morecroft got her start at Essendon VFLW and most recently coached North Melbourne’s AFLW side.

“I think it’s good to have an insight into what the players are going through and the rigors of the season and training, so I think that’s a really big tick,” she said.

“But then also now having experience in coaching over the last couple of years, I’ve developed which has helped me too.

“It’s nice - there’s probably not too many coaches that have also played as well in the role, so I probably have that little advantage.”

Morecroft splits her time between coaching and being a teacher, a combination she says has helped her develop as a coach.

“I guess the organisation part and communication part for sure and I’m really relationship based with my coaching and my teaching, so they definitely go hand-in-hand,” she said.

“I’ve learnt a lot through my teaching. I’ve been teaching nearly ten years now, so I guess that helps for sure in my coaching.”
