A STUNNING year from Jacob Weitering has seen the young gun take the first significant step to his first All-Australian berth.

Carlton’s No.23 has officially been named in the 40-man square for the 2020 Virgin Australia AFL All-Australian team.

Coming on the same day as his vice-captaincy in the 22under22 side, Weitering could follow in the footsteps of co-captains Sam Docherty (2017) and Patrick Cripps (2018, 2019) in making the All-Australian side.

If selected for the final team, it will be Weitering’s first All-Australian blazer since arriving at Carlton with pick No.1 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

A star defender for the Blues all season, Weitering has posted the second lowest defensive loss percentage for key defenders, behind teammate Liam Jones.

He also rates above average in the competition for intercept possessions and spoils, while a key feature of his game was his ability to get his job done against opposition forwards.

Weitering kept both Jeremy Cameron and Tom Lynch to zero goals and zero marks in direct opposition, while also restricting the influence of Tom Hawkins (four marks, two goals) and Eric Hipwood (two marks, one goal).

The final team will be announced on Thursday night on FOX Footy.

Selection on Thursday night will be another feather in the cap for Weitering, who committed his long-term future to Carlton by signing a deal to extend his stay at Ikon Park until at least the end of 2025.
