THE curtain has been drawn on an unprecedented 2020 season for the Navy Blues.

Trading Ikon Park for 10 different hotel hubs across Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, it’s been a year we won’t soon forget.

With the final siren having rung on the final game, it’s time to look at those who featured in five or more games for Carlton or made their AFL debuts in 2020.

Here’s the year that was for Carlton’s No.40, Levi Casboult.

OVERVIEW

For just the second time in his nine seasons at AFL level, Levi Casboult played a full complement of games in 2020 after a career-best start to the year.

As he closes in on 150 Navy Blue games, Casboult entered the top 100 for all-time games played at Carlton after featuring in all 17 games in 2020.

Following his career renaissance last year, Casboult was a force in the opening months of the season, regularly among Carlton’s best players and leading the competition for contested marks in the early going.

With decisive showings in wins against Geelong, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs, Casboult rewarded Senior Coach David Teague for the faith shown in him as a consistent face in the senior side.

BEST PERFORMANCE

It’s very hard to see how Carlton would’ve come away from the Cattery with four points if it wasn’t for its No.41.

Providing all sorts of headaches for the eventual Grand Finalists, Casboult was awarded nine coaches’ votes for his showing against Geelong in Round 3.

As Carlton held on for a memorable victory, it was Casboult who came up trumps alongside forward partners Mitch McGovern and Harry McKay.

Hauling in five contested marks to go with his two goals, Casboult was just about unstoppable in the air as the Blues won at Kardinia Park for the first time since 1996.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

While his best performance came in Round 3, Casboult’s season highlight would come a week later.

With another three goals to his name in a one-point win over Essendon, Casboult achieved something 128 games in the making.

It was only made official on Brownlow night, but Casboult’s showing against the arch rival was enough to earn him two Brownlow votes — the first of his career.

Somehow, the big man had been denied despite brilliant performances against Collingwood in 2016 and both Adelaide and St Kilda in 2019. Not this time.

THEY SAID IT

A Blue since day one, Casboult officially penned an extension to stay at the Blues until at least the end of 2021.

“I want to thank all my coaches and teammates for their support and for believing in me over the past 11 years,” Casboult said.

“I’m extremely grateful for my family - especially this year - for what they have given up to allow me to live my dream. Without them and the Club, I would not be where I am.

“I am determined to keep working hard and improving wherever I can to help this club continue to succeed moving forward.”
