The Saint-turned-Blue wrote himself into the Carlton history books with one of the greatest after-the-siren goals in the history of the game against Fremantle. It was a strong start for the solid Newnes in his first season at Carlton, playing every game for the year: it was the sixth time in the last seven years Newnes has managed the feat. Showing his knack to hit the scoreboard from the wing, Newnes contributed 13 goals for the season and was an ever-present for David Teague, often featuring on a wing but also capable of playing a role across half forward or half back.
