It was a comeback story for the ages.
Having undergone two rounds of chemotherapy across both 2020 and 2021, Sam Docherty burst back onto the scene, returning to football to enjoy a stellar 2022 campaign.
Docherty played all 22 games, being a vital link for the Blues before moving into the midfield late in the season to compensate for injuries.
Respected as one of the smartest footballers in the competition, he was instrumental in the setup of the backline, reinforcing messages on the field and proving his leadership on and off the field.
It was a testament to an outstanding season when Docherty finished second in the 2022 John Nicholls Medal count.
He and wife Natalie welcomed baby Ruby to bring in the new year.
