CARLTON is pleased to announce key defender Lewis Young has re-signed with the Club for a further three years.

The 24-year-old joined Carlton at the end of 2021 after a three-way trade with the Western Bulldogs and the West Coast Eagles.

Debuting for the Club in Round 3 last season, the defender has been impressive in his 19 games for the Blues, which coincided with his most consistent year in footy so far, since being selected by the Bulldogs at pick No.49 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.

Young shouldered the responsibility as the Club’s No.1 lockdown defender for a significant period of the year, showcasing his value by leading the side for intercept marks in 2022.

In Round 22 against reigning premiers Melbourne, Young broke the record for most spoils in a game with 24, further highlighting the growth he enjoyed throughout his maiden year in the Navy Blue.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said Young showed the resilience to step up as a pillar of the Blues’ backline when he was called upon, proving his value as a teammate while adding much-needed depth to the backline.

“We were thrilled with what we saw from Lewis in his first season at the football club and he has backed that up over the summer, so to have him re-commit for another three years is a great result,” Austin said.

“Lewis really stood up last year when a few of his fellow defenders were out: his opportunity came, and he certainly took it with both hands.

“Lewis typifies our philosophy of being a good teammate, both on and off the field. We believe he has a lot of growth still ahead of him and we can’t wait to see his game grow and develop over the next few years.”
