THE CARLTON Football Club is excited to announce emerging defenders and childhood Blues supporters Lachlan Cowan, Matt Carroll and Harry O’Farrell have all extended their contracts with the Club.

In a ‘mooooove’ that will excite fans, today’s signing will see Cowan continue in the Navy Blue until at least the end of 2028, with Carroll and O’Farrell continuing until 2027.

It’s a show of faith from both Cowan and the Club, with the emerging Blue opting to sign on despite already being contracted for the next season.

Joining Carlton in the 2022 AFL Draft at pick No.30, the 20-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2024, with the emerging talent renowned for his constant team-first approach.

The Tasmanian has worked on growing his role as a lockdown defender, working closely with fellow defender Nic Newman, who has taken him under his wing since arriving at the IKON Park.

Selected by Carlton with pick No.15 in the 2023 AFL Rookie Draft, Carroll returned to the Blues’ list at the start of the year, signing as part of the pre-season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).

After a strong pre-season and impressing in the VFL, Carroll made his debut in the Club’s Round 5 win against the West Coast, collecting 12 disposals and eight marks.

Going on to play 10 games so far this season, the emerging defender is regarded for this agility and speed. Possessing impressive football IQ, he backs himself in the air and on the ground.

O’Farrell joined the Blues at the end of the last year in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft with pick No. 40, immediately impressing when he first walked into IKON Park, attacking training in an elite manner.

Rewarded for effort on the training field, the Calder Canons recruit made his debut for the Navy Blue in Round 11 against GWS, winning his first contest and producing three important intercepts in the first quarter alone.

Standing at 197 centimetres tall, the intercepting key defender has impressive speed for his height, with outstanding poise in the air.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said the Club was pleased to see all three defenders on the rise commit to Carlton.

“With seven AFL debutants so far this year, we have had a look at our future, and Lachie, Matt and Harry are clearly a big part of that - we couldn’t be more pleased to see them re-sign," Austin said.

“All three have put in an immense amount of work to grow their body and better their football fundamentals, ultimately setting themselves up for success at the top level. To be able to recognise and reward their effort is great.

“Their confidence has grown exponentially since beginning at the Blues, proving they can be great assets to our backline both now and in the future.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the work Lachie, Matt and Harry have put in since arriving at IKON Park and are excited to see what they do in the Navy Blue as their careers begins to emerge.”
