CARLTON defender Nic Newman will call IKON Park home until at least the end of 2026 after signing a new deal.

Arriving at Carlton at the end of 2019 in exchange for a future fourth-round pick, Newman has gone on to become a back-to-back runner up in the John Nicholls Medal, three-time best clubman and one of the most beloved Blues amongst the Carlton faithful.

Across his career, Newman rates elite in his average disposals (21), tackles (3.4), metres gained (407.2) and marks (6.5).

A quality footballer and even better teammate, it comes as no surprise that the 32-year-old has established himself as mentor amongst the younger members of the playing group, including recently re-signed and fellow small defender Lachie Cowan.

Sidelined this season due to a patella injury, Newman threw himself at the opportunity to further develop his football knowledge and coaching experience, taking on a bench coaching role with the AFL side.

He has also previously been an assistant coach with the Club’s AFLW team.

Nic is the kind of person and player you want at your club. He naturally embodies all the values we hold in high regard at Carlton, both on and off the field.

- Nick Austin

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said Newman’s value to IKON Park was just as profound off the field as it clearly is on it.

“Nic is a consistent player, when he is on the field, you can back him in to play any role tasked to him. His ability to predict the play and make an impact in bringing the ball forward is impressive,” Austin said.

“Nic is the kind of person and player you want at your club. He naturally embodies all the values we hold in high regard at Carlton, both on and off the field. He is unrelenting and carries himself with such humility – a great example to the young guys we have seen start to emerge at senior level.

“Nic's on-field leadership is an invaluable asset, he helps to dictate the play on the field whilst leading the backline with such poise, alongside co-vice captain Jacob Weitering.

“We are really pleased that Nic, along with his fiancé Sam and daughter Audrey, will continue to call IKON Park home.”
