Sophie McKay has been named the Round 4 Telstra AFLW Rising Star nominee.

McKay earned the nomination after a stellar match against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, scoring two goals and collecting 13 disposals.

Arriving at the Blues through the 2024 AFLW draft, taken with pick No.17, McKay made her debut in the Club's season opener win against Collingwood.

A tenacious forward, McKay often finds herself in dangerous attacking positions, finding her first goal in Round 3 against Brisbane and then backing it up with two goals on the weekend.

Senior Coach Mathew Buck said McKay had earned the recognition after an eye-catching opening month to her career.

“What you see is what you get with Sophie, she is such a ball of energy and has been a wonderful addition to our side,” Buck said.

“Sophie has freakish skills that have been on show at training to see her put it all together on the field was great.

“She is competitive in the air and can grab on to contested marks whilst backing that up in front of goals. Combine this with her defensive ability to get up the ground and work her way back, she is a great asset to our side.

“It is not only a testament to the work she has in this pre-season but the hard work she through her experience and involvement in the Carlton Academy program over the past few years.

“At just 19 years old she has a such a long career ahead of her and she is just getting started.”
