Carlton defender Mitch McGovern will continue at the Blues in 2026 after signing a one-year extension.

Nearing both 150 AFL games and a century in the Navy Blue jumper, McGovern showcased his versatility this season with the ability to play both ends of the ground, kicking seven goals in a fortnight after swinging forward from his customary position down back - where he has shown an ability to play on both talls and smalls inside defensive 50.

Skilful with ball in hand, he has been a popular member of the playing group since arriving at the Blues at the end of 2018, enjoying a close relationship with co-vice captain Jacob Weitering.

The 31-year-old also has a strong passion for social causes, being an ambassador for the Club’s community initiative Carlton Respects, while also playing an important role in organising the player-led Good Friday Appeal auction, which has raised over $26k across the past two years for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said the Club is pleased to see McGovern continue at the Blues.

“Mitch’s versatility at both ends of the ground, combined with the experience he brings will see him add some flexibility to our side next season,” Austin said.

“He fits seamlessly into our structure and helps strengthen our team across the field in a number of positions.

“We look forward to seeing him back at IKON Park and getting stuck into pre-season training.”
