LIAM Jones will be treated for concussion after being cleared of head and neck injuries.

Jones was taken from the Marvel Stadium ground on a stretcher after a head clash with North Melbourne’s Cam Zurhaar in the third quarter.

Pleasingly for the in-form defender, Director of High Performance Andrew Russell said the outlook for Jones was positive.

“‘Jonesy’ went to hospital after the game and spent a couple of hours there. The specialist checked him over and he went home on Sunday night,” Russell said.

“He pulled up really well [on Monday], we’re pleased with how well he’s recovered after such a big incident.

“Things are really positive. What’s most pleasing is he’s been cleared of any significant head or neck injuries, so we’re dealing with a case of concussion.”

With Jones going down, the Blues were also without the experience of Kade Simpson and Nic Newman across half back after sustaining injuries against Hawthorn.

Russell said veteran Simpson was tracking as scheduled.

“’Simmo’ is settling as we’d expect, we won’t see him playing for the next couple of weeks. As we said last week, he’s a 3-4 week injury,” he said.

There was a similar view for Newman, who the Blues missed on the weekend with his ability to provide drive from defence.

“Newman’s knee is settling down, he’s back running,” he said.

“Similar to ’Simmo’, we won’t see him out there for the next two weeks and after that we expect him to be back.”
