A DREAM came true when Bluebagger Sharnie Whiting was drafted to her childhood club.

The 19-year-old was lost for words when her name was called at the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.

Carlton drafted the key forward from Williamstown with selection No.36 in Tuesday’s draft, as she became one of seven draftees set to call Ikon Park home in 2020.

Overlooked in last year’s draft, Whiting spoke of the emotion when she was selected on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s crazy, words can’t really describe it,” Whiting said.

With little indication of if or when she would be selected, Whiting spent Tuesday at home waiting for her name to be called.

While Carlton recruiters had interviewed the promising Seagull, there was little indication of where Whiting ranked in their minds up until draft day.

“I was at home on the couch just chilling out,” she said.

“I didn’t know how to feel, whether to be nervous and excited.

“I did have a meeting with them [Carlton], but there wasn’t really any indication that they would.

“I think it would have been a surprise either way.”

Describing herself as a versatile player, Whiting has been most impactful in the forward line throughout her under-18s career and later for Williamstown.

Renowned for her elite ball use and clean hands, Whiting is prepared to grow and develop in a variety of roles in the Navy Blue.

“I’ve come from Wyndhamvale, where I played for three years and did pretty well. Then I played for the Western Jets, before obviously moving onto Williamstown,” she said.

“I’m a versatile player, I like playing everywhere."

As for the players she’s most excited to run out alongside in 2020, Whiting can’t go past the Blues’ star-studded forward line.

After all, they’re the very player she has idolised in recent seasons. Now, they’ll be her teammates.

“I guess being a forward player, probably Tayla Harris and Darcy Vescio.

“I think it’s just an honour to be just be in the presence of them.”
