INACCURACY in front of goal proved costly for the Carlton Reserves in a nail-biting finish at Windy Hill.
Carlton generated enough opportunities to win the game late, but were unable to fully capitalise on their dominance when the game was up for grabs in the 14.9 (93) to 11.19 (85) defeat.
Essendon opened the scoring after controlling early territory. Still, Carlton responded through a quick snap under pressure from Ben Camporeale, who found Hudson O’Keeffe close to goal for the Blues’ first. Oliver Warburton then kicked a strong running goal as Carlton began to work into the contest.
A strong mark from Sam Paea resulted in his first goal of the year, returning from a knee injury suffered in the pre-season, as Carlton briefly regained the lead.
Despite Carlton’s improved ball movement, Essendon finished the quarter strongly to take a 15-point lead at quarter-time, despite both sides having the same amount of scoring shots.
Carlton struggled for clean execution early in the second quarter, with both sides finding it scrappy. The Blues responded through Cooper Lord, whose clever kick out of congestion found Matthew Cottrell, who converted to bring the margin back.
Essendon kicked consecutive goals to push the lead to a game-high 28 points, but Carlton worked its way back into the game through pressure and territory. Playing in a new role across half-back, Ashton Moir’s composure through traffic set up Logan Prout, before Lord snapped truly after strong forward-half pressure.
Taj Logan then added another quick goal before Sam Paea’s second major brought Carlton back within 12 points at half-time, with the Blues gaining momentum heading into the main break.
Essendon again struck first in the third quarter to extend the margin, but Carlton responded through Matthew Cottrell, who snapped brilliantly from the pocket to keep the Blues within reach. Taj Logan then delivered inside 50 to Liam Farrar, who couldn’t convert, as Carlton continued to generate chances but couldn’t fully punish the Bombers.
Essendon then took control late in the term with two consecutive goals, stretching the margin to 25 points at three-quarter time despite Carlton staying competitive in general play.
Carlton’s pressure lifted significantly in the final quarter, with sustained forward-half dominance creating wave after wave of opportunities. Zac Williams delivered a bullet inside 50 to O’Keeffe, who converted to open the term for the Blues.
Moments later, Williams again drove the ball forward, this time finding Liam Farrar, who kicked truly to cut the margin to nine points. Logan Prout then added another as Carlton surged hard, reducing the gap to just three points and putting real pressure on the Bombers.
However, Carlton’s inaccuracy ultimately proved costly. Zac Williams hit the post from a set shot, and Ashton Moir narrowly missed from a quick snap as the Blues closed in but couldn’t quite complete the comeback.
Essendon steadied late with a goal after 26 minutes to seal an eight-point win.
Carlton finished with 11.19, having generated far more opportunities than the scoreboard suggested, but were left to rue missed chances in a game that saw them register 70 more disposals, 25 more inside 50s and seven more scoring shots.
Carlton’s best players included Lachie Fogarty (29 disposals), Cooper Lord (28 disposals, one goal), Darcy Hogg (28 disposals), Ben Camporeale (27 disposals), Zac Williams (22 disposals, six tackles), Lewis Young (21 disposals, 14 marks), and Matthew Cottrell (17 disposals, two goals).
