DIFFERENT week, same process.
Josh Fraser and Carlton aren’t projecting too far ahead when it comes to the test of taking on Hawthorn at the MCG this Saturday night.
With the Blues on a winning run and the Hawks seeking a response, it promises to be a must-watch affair at the home of football.
Here’s what Fraser had to say.
On the test of Hawthorn this week:
“They’re all big games. I understand the narrative around this one and Hawthorn being a team that’s going to contend for top four, but we’ve looked at every opponent with the utmost respect.
“We feel as though each week is an opportunity to get earn a result: this competition is close and games are hard to win, I think this week specifically against an opposition that’s highly regarded is going to be a great test for us.
“We look over a lot of vision over the season, we’re preparing for their best footy. They’ve got weapons across the ground, terrific players that can impact games quickly with their ability to move the ball on teams and their clearance work.
“There’s a lot of different challenges that will present for us, it’s important we have an awareness of their strengths but also lean into ours.”

On how he reacted to last week’s win:
“In many ways, I was quite pleased. I want to reference the challenge that this competition brings in terms of getting results. For us, it’s finding new ways to win: historically, we struggled to get results if we haven’t won clearance and that’s an area of the game we were poor in.
“Our transition game was strong. We’re still finding out about ourselves and still growing our brand of football: I wouldn’t discredit our players for getting a result in a game where parts of our game wasn’t great, but we found a way to get [a result].”
On how to approach this week’s game, in search of a ‘top-four scalp’:
“I think we’re ready to keep getting better, that’s been our process for 5-6 weeks. We’re not looking at it so much as taking a scalp rather than focusing on the opposition in front of us. That’s what we’ve been about.
“Our players have done a great job at staying present to that and understanding in our game against Richmond, there were areas we’ve got to get to work in and there were parts of our game that we look quite strong. We need to double down on the week we’re doing there.
“We’re mindful of the opposition and respectful of what they’ll bring, making sure we tighten the screws in terms of different parts of our game.”
On Harry Dean’s availability:
“He’s training today, so we’re really hopeful he’ll be available.
“It [the glove] might be a fashion statement from Harry. He’s done some ball work and we expect him to be able to get through training.”
On Jacob Weitering:
“Jacob’s had a re-injury which we’ve spoken about, and we’ll know a little more in a week or so around his timeline. It’ll be a considered approach to how we give Jacob the best chance to return.
“There’s no set timeline at this point, other than making sure we get all the information and set out a really clear plan for him.”
On how the Blues will approach selection, after Blake Acres’ omission last week:
“Like most players, selection is alive each week. That’s why we’ve pushed the importance of performances at VFL level, pushed the importance of training at a high level. Our selection becomes really considered towards the opposition and a way to keep exploring our list.
“Blake is one of many players that’ll come into conversation around what this week looks like.”
