CONTROL what can be controlled.

That’s the message from Senior Coach David Teague in the most uncertain of weeks.

For months, Thursday night’s fixture presented the chance to take on the reigning premiers in front of 90,000 people.

Speaking on AFL 360 less than 72 hours away from the season opener, there was still doubt as to whether the game would take place.

Teague said it was crucial that the Blues didn’t let the circumstances around the game get to them.

“We’re preparing to play on Thursday night,” Teague said.

“If it changes, it changes. Whatever the next game is, whether we do play this Thursday and when our next game is - we’ll need to make sure we’re ready.

“Everyone is in the same boat, so it’s up to the club and each group and individual to make sure they’re ready to perform and play well.”

Teague said the Club had canvassed the opinions and feelings of the AFL playing group, where there was a unanimous response to wear the Navy Blue on Thursday night.

While it’s a unique set of circumstances, Teague said the Blues were adopting the mindset that it was another challenge to overcome.

“As professional athletes, you’re always challenged. It’s how you adjust to those challenges from a training point of view and a mental point of view,’ he said.

“We haven’t been here before, we haven’t done this.

“Hopefully what we do is put some good protocols in place to really protect the players and the staff, as well as the fans.

“When [the fans] do come back, [we’ll make sure] it’s a safe environment to enjoy this great game.”

After everything, Teague said he was looking forward to seeing his players doing what they love.

“You do a lot of pre-season and these guys have put a lot of work in,” he said.

“Right now, they’re looking forward to this moment.

“The 17 games is better than none.”
