“I DON’T really want to be a team that just competes. We’re coming here to win.”
While Carlton supporters may have been pleased with their team’s fight, Senior Coach David Teague isn’t satisfied with Thursday night’s performance.
Overturning a 50-point deficit against the reigning premier, Carlton got within 16 points in the season opener before ultimately falling by four goals.
It was a slow start which cost the Blues, with Teague leaving his side under no illusions in terms of the opportunity lost.
Speaking to media, he said he was pleased with the heart shown but was ruing the lapse in the first term.
“[The start] was very disappointing. I thought we were up for the challenge,” Teague said.
“We did some good things: we were winning the ball in close. But they got us on the outside and they scored too easily.
Inside the rooms, it was more of the same. On the outside, it was anything but.

“I thought the boys showed resilience throughout the game and we found a way to play more of our style.”

The shift on the scoreboard came in the second half, with the Blues at one stage piling on seven of eight goals.
Teague said the game swung in the second term, but the frustration came when Carlton was unable to get reward for effort on the scoreboard.
“Our second quarter, we did a lot right. But we kicked 1.4, they kicked 4.1,” he said.
“The numbers started to shift in the second quarter, but the scoreboard didn’t start shifting until the third.
“In the first quarter, I was very disappointed. After quarter time, we started to play a little bit more of our way.”
