The Northern Blues will be looking to cement their place in the VFL’s top eight, when they take on North Ballarat at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues are into seventh place on the ladder, after a gutsy 18-point win over Collingwood.

The match marked the return from injury of several Carlton-listed players, including David Ellard, Patrick Cripps and Jaryd Cachia.

Northern Blues coach Luke Webster says all three players got through unscathed.

“Cachia only missed the one week and his return was really good,” Webster said.

“He had a slow start but found a fair bit of the footy later in the second half – I think he had about 26 touches.

“Davey Ellard, he and Crippa (Patrick Cripps) are on limited game time and played about 65 per cent game time each across the whole game. We got them through and they both pulled up really well.”

Meanwhile Matthew Watson found himself in a new role at the other end of the ground.

Webster says the trial of Watson on the forward line was a success.

“At the Northern Blues we’ve been struggling for a little bit of a tall forward and we thought it was an opportunity to see what Matty Watson could do down there – and it worked for us,” Webster said.

“He kicked three goals and he worked well with Jarrad Waite and Jeffy Garlett and a couple of the other guys who were down there.”

The Northern Blues face Ballarat at Eureka Stadium on Sunday 13 July at 2pm.
