Blues sign trio
Dennis Armfield, Paul Bower and Bret Thornton have each re-signed with the Club
Armfield, 22, Bower, 21, and Thornton, 25, will remain at the club until at least the end of 2011.
Recruited from Swan Districts as Carlton’s third round selection at the 2007 NAB Draft, Armfield has played 21 games for Carlton since making his debut in Round 10, 2008.
Originally from North Mandurah, Bower was recruited to Carlton with selection 20 overall in the 2005 NAB Draft. He made his debut in Round 21, 2006 and has played 37 games for the Club.
Having played 141 games, Thornton is Carlton’s most experienced defender. He was elevated to the senior list in 2002 after being recruited to the club through the 2002 Rookie Draft. Thornton was the Blues Best First Year Player in 2002 and played in Carlton’s 2005 & 2007 Pre-Season Premierships.
“We are delighted to re-sign Dennis, Paul and Bret for a further two seasons. They are all important young players, who will play a major role in the long-term future of the Carlton Football Club,” General Manager – Football Operations, Steven Icke said.
“Dennis and Paul were both recruited to the Club from Western Australia. While Paul’s development as an attacking defender has been on show this season, equally impressive for us has been the development of Dennis in his second season in the AFL. Originally from a Rugby background, Dennis didn’t have the football background that most recruits have and we believe there is still a large upside for him as he continues his development.
“Bret is now one of our senior players and while still young at just 25 years of age, he is one of the oldest players on the Carlton list. He will continue to be a vital part of our defence as we maintain our development and grow as a football team. At 25 and having played over 140 games Bret’s leadership and experience will prove vital for our young defence.
"The commitment made by all three players is positive for our future and an indication of the desire within the playing group to stay together and to continue to work together to build future success for the Carlton Football Club."
