They Know We Came - To Perth
Carlton has always had great support in the West and Sunday was no exception
The weekend kicked off on Saturday with a great turnout of almost 175 to watch the "Yellow" boys train. A nice lunch with our Blues supporters who have flown over from Victoria for the game and some good old WA hospitality then its up at 8am on Sunday and on our way to the WA Blues function.
Carlton has always had great support in the West and Sunday was no exception. With 470 Carlton faithful at the Italian Club - you know its going to be a fantastic day. Ian Coutts - our favourite MC - raised some great funds for the club auctioning a signed jumper, signed footy and a few signed caps. They were all hotly contested items with Juddy's cap going for over $300.
Joe Anderson, Robert Harvey and Stephen Kernahan were our special guests. It took Stick's nearly 30 minutes to get to his table with the supporters all keen to get an autograph. No objections from the great man - he just kept signing and smiling for photos.
The WA Supporter Group run several fundraisers throughout the year and were extremely proud to use this opportunity to present Sticks with a cheque for $5000 for the club.
After a beautiful meal and some great interviews with our guests it was then onto the buses for the trip to the ground.
No Carlton game at Subiaco is complete without a trip to the merchandise van and a chat with Jai. I know now why there were so many Carlton jumpers at the ground - the crowd was 10 deep at the van and Jai was being run off her feet. Maybe I'll come back later. A half time visit saw Jai and Jacinta packing up as they had pretty much sold out.
The game didn't really start off how we would hope but the important thing is the end result and that was a ripper. The crowd was in full voice - you almost would have thought you were at the MCG. Carlton has well over 2000 paid up members here in WA and there seemed to be almost that many at the ground - or did we just sound like it? I watched the replay on Monday and could hear the song start up with about 3 minutes to go in the final quarter.
After the final siren, the boys came to the fence to high five and acknowledge the supporters which is always appreciated. We feel pretty sure our barracking had to account for at least 2 goals.
After about another 10 renditions of the theme song on the way to the bus it was back to the Italian Club to finish off the day.
Thank you again to the fantastic committee we have here in WA and to all our loyal and faithful supporters who not only come to these functions but join us at our supporter base - the Odin Tavern in Balcatta.
Can’t wait for next year.
