SETANTA O'hAilpin could be the surprise solution to the power forward vacancy left by Brendan Fevola, according to Carlton coach Brett Ratten.

The Irishman kept Carlton in the hunt against Collingwood on Sunday with five goals, before the Pies kicked away to a 53-point victory.

“It was really pleasing for the big fella to get amongst the goals. He led at the ball marked the ball strongly today and made the most of his opportunities,” Ratten said.

But O’hAilpin was a lone figure for the Blues, and the Carlton coach could not hide his frustration at how his side played into Collingwood’s hands.

“We didn’t put their backs under enormous pressure because we turned the ball over in the middle of the ground when we had the opportunity to really get the ball in there,” he said.

“I thought we played straight into their hands by handballing and handballing and handballing.”

Despite being just three points down at the 17-minute mark of the third quarter, the Pies kicked away as the Blues went into their shell.

“We didn’t play a style or brand that we have," Ratten said.

"We allowed Collingwood the opportunity to tackle us and we know they are a very good tackling team and they did that very well."

The Blues must now shift their focus to the Saints next Monday night at Etihad Stadium, and finding a way through the St Kilda defensive zone that strangled the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.

The Bulldogs only kicked six goals against the Saints, and the Carlton coach knows he has his work ahead of him.

“I think each team has their style - I think the Saints will get numbers behind but how much they will get behind and how hard they will press forward, I’m not sure.

“I think it just shows when you stick to a plan and you play it to the last the minute, the opportunity to get the result is right there.”
