IT was a significant and memorable over Collingwood for many reasons, none of which were lost on the team.

The Blues turned a 24-point deficit into a 29-point victory on the back of a blistering final-quarter effort, where they outscored the Pies six goals to none to register their first win over the old enemy since 2017.

While the Blues’ hope of playing finals football in 2021 remains alive, midfielder Jack Newnes shared that the group would be keeping focused on the ‘week-to-week’ and playing a game-style that would set them up for success in the future.

Speaking to SEN, Newnes recognised that while the belief had been there amongst the playing group, it has been a shift in defensive effort which has seen the Blues win three of their last four games.

“We’ve had belief throughout the whole year. It’s been a little bit up-and-down and we had a fair few losses, but we knew deep down that we could produce some good footy,” Newnes said.

“In probably the last month or so, we think our defence has really ramped up which has helped us be in the majority of games and win those three of our last four.

“The blokes in our backline like 'Jonesy' and 'Weiters' are just incredible. They kind of play on the edge and play in front of their opponents at times which teams can sometimes get goals out the back, but we think it’s the best way for us to defend.”

The win over Collingwood also paid the perfect tribute to Club Legend Sergio Silvagni who passed away during the week.

A name synonymous with the Navy Blue, the loss of 'Serge' added even more significance to the game, with the Blues digging deep to get the win for the Silvagni family.

The midfielder also praised the efforts of Jack Silvagni, calling out his monumental efforts in what had been an emotionally charged week for the young Blue.

“It really was emotional,” he said.

“The Silvagnis have just given so much to the Carlton Football Club and it was a massive week for Jack.

“For him to go out and play the way he did was just a testament to him and his family. It was probably just a little bit more special for the whole group as well.

"We knew that it was one of those games where you wanted to dig in and win because it was just so important for the whole Carlton family and to the Silvagnis.”
